Learning objectives

 

- To understand that magnet will attract magnetic material such as iron,steel, nickel and cobalt.

 

- To see the magnetic field around a magnet and know that magnetic material will experience a force within this region.

 

- To understand like poles repel, unlike poles attract

 

- To understand that magnet (while suspended freely) will always point  towards the North and south direction.

 

- To understand that magnet is strongest at the two poles

 

- To know how to magnetise a magnetic material and demagnetise a magnet 

 

- To make an electromagnet

 

- To use magnetic material as magnetic shield

 

- To have hands-on sessions on some application of magnet (junk yard electromagnet, electric bell)

Elastic Force and Gravitational Force in Action

Kids per class : A minimum of 2 (maximum of 6)

Duration : 1.5 hour

Learning objectives:

 

- To see some elastic force in action

 

- To understand the factors (F = kx) affecting elastic force (the amount of stretch or compress and the material)

 

- To make catapult and cloth peg match stick launcher to shot the    furthest.

 

- To understand the proportionality of the force with amount of extension/compression of spring.

 

- To understand that gravity is caused by mass of objects.

 

- To understand the difference between mass and weight.

 

- To convert between mass and weight.

 

- To understand centre of gravity and locate the centre of gravity of different object.

 

- Experience fun hands-on activities involving centre of gravity.

 

 

Friction in action

- To understand the mechanism of friction

 

- Definition of friction

 

- Understand that friction is a reaction force

 

- Investigate the factors which affect frictional force through experiments.

 

- Experience fun hands-on activities involving friction.

Learning objectives:

 

- To know that force is a push or a pull

 

- To understand and experience the different types of forces. Gravitational force, friction, air resistance, magnetic force and elastic force.

 

- To understand the effect of forces (i) force can make things move faster/slower, (ii) force can make things start moving / stop moving, (iii) force can make an object changes shape and size, (iv) force can change the direction of a moving object

 

- To know that there is contact force such as friction and non contact force such as gravitational force

 

- Experience with some applications of force
