suspended magnet pointer consists of a base, a stand with a needle and a strong big magnet. The needle provided a low friction pivot to suspend the magnet freely. When left the magnet on the pointer, the magnet will rotate to the North-South direction due to the Earth's magnetic force. This is to show that compass needle is made from a magnet.
